UKMLA AKT Dates 2027: How Booking Works and How to Plan Before Dates Drop

2027 AKT date grids aren't published yet — UK students get dates from their medical school and IMGs book via GMC Online. How scheduling actually works, what the recent pattern suggests, and how to build a 2027 timeline now (every sitting is on the updated content map).

Planning a 2027 AKT sitting? Here's the honest state of play: 2027 date grids aren't centrally published yet — and how you get your date depends entirely on which of the two candidate groups you're in. UK medical students are given dates by their medical school; international candidates book through GMC Online as the GMC releases dates.

This page is the planning hub for the 2027 cohort: how dates actually get set, what the recent scheduling pattern looks like, the one thing every 2027 sitter already knows for certain (you're on the updated content map), and how to build a preparation timeline when the date isn't printed yet.

We keep this post updated as 2027 information is published — the same way our 2026 dates guide tracked last cycle.

1. The two routes to an AKT date

The AKT (Applied Knowledge Test) is one exam with two scheduling systems:

  • UK medical students sit it as part of finals, at their medical school, on dates the school sets within the national assessment framework.
  • International candidates on the MLA route book through GMC Online, choosing from dates and locations the GMC releases.

That split explains why "AKT dates 2027" has no single answer — and why the right move differs by group.

2. UK medical students: how your date is set

Your medical school tells you your date; you don't book anything yourself. In practice that means:

  • Your school's assessment calendar is the authoritative source — check it before any third-party site, this one included.
  • Schools schedule finals-year assessments months ahead; most 2027 sitters will know their window during the 2026/27 academic year.
  • Your controllable variable isn't the date — it's the runway you give yourself before it. (Section 6.)

3. IMGs: how AKT booking works

If you're an IMG taking the MLA route to registration:

  • Dates and locations are released by the GMC, and you book via your GMC Online account once eligible.
  • Popular slots fill quickly — the same seats-and-batches reality PLAB candidates know. Book early inside your window rather than waiting for a "perfect" week.
  • Full route details, eligibility and how the AKT fits GMC registration are in our UKMLA guide for IMGs.

4. What the recent pattern suggests for 2027

Treat this section as pattern, not promise: recent cycles have run multiple international sittings across the year at overseas locations, with UK student sittings clustered around each school's finals period. Two 2027-specific cautions:

  • International exam capacity is being consolidated. From February 2027, the GMC reduces international PLAB 1 delivery (four centres close; sittings drop from four to three a year). That announcement is about PLAB 1 specifically — but it signals how the GMC is managing overseas exam capacity, and IMGs should plan for booking windows that reward acting early. Full breakdown here.
  • Nothing beats the source. When 2027 grids appear, they appear on the GMC's site and in GMC Online first. Anything else — including this page — is a planning aid.

5. The one certainty: the updated content map

Whatever your 2027 date turns out to be, one fact is already locked: every exam sat from September 2026 onward is set against the updated MLA content map. The update matters — the mapping grid was removed, the condition list grew substantially, and the map is now explicitly "indicative and non-exhaustive."

If any of that is news, read these in order:

  1. The UKMLA content map, explained
  2. What changed in the September 2026 update

And audit your resources for map currency — anything built for the pre-2026 map needs checking before you trust it with a 2027 attempt.

6. Building a timeline without a confirmed date

You don't need a printed date to start; you need a target window and a working backwards plan:

  1. Pick your probable window (your school's usual finals period, or the quarter you intend to book as an IMG).
  2. Measure your baseline now. Ten minutes: ten real questions, no account. Fuller picture: the free 50-question diagnostic with a per-specialty breakdown.
  3. Size your runway from the gap, not the calendar. A strong baseline can compress preparation; a weak one needs the full 12-week structured plan — or longer alongside work.
  4. Practise questions daily, read the referenced explanation every time, track by specialty. Volume guidance is in how many questions you need.
  5. Rehearse the real thing with timed mocks before the window opens — how to use mocks properly.

7. Adjacent 2027 dates worth tracking

The AKT rarely travels alone in a 2027 plan:

  • UKFP 2027 (foundation applications): the eligibility window ran extraordinarily tight this cycle (three weeks in July 2026), fees and evidence rules changed — the key changes.
  • PLAB 1 2027: fewer centres, three international sittings — what changed.
  • MSRA (specialty recruitment): windows announced per recruitment round; if that's on your horizon, see how AKT prep transfers to the MSRA.

8. FAQ

Have the 2027 AKT dates been announced? Not as a published central grid at the time of writing. UK students receive dates from their medical school; IMGs will see bookable dates in GMC Online as the GMC releases them. We update this page as information lands.

Will 2027 sittings use the new content map? Yes. The updated map applies to all exams from September 2026 onward — every 2027 sitting is on it.

How far in advance should IMGs book? As early as your preparation honestly allows once dates open. Recent years show seats releasing in batches and high-demand regions filling fast — and the GMC's 2027 consolidation of PLAB 1 delivery suggests planning buffer, not cutting it fine.

When should I start revising for a 2027 sitting? Work backwards from your target window using your measured baseline — the full method is in our when to start revising guide.

Where's the definitive source for dates? UK students: your medical school. IMGs: your GMC Online account and the GMC website. Bookmark both; verify everything else against them.
