PLAB 1 Revision Notes & Question Bank PDF: A Safe, Legit Alternative (2026)

Where to get PLAB 1 revision notes and questions as a PDF in 2026 — why the free downloads are a trap, how the MLA content map alignment changes things, and a NICE-referenced set you own.

Search "PLAB 1 revision notes PDF" or "PLAB 1 question bank PDF" and the results are a minefield: leaked PlabKeys files, Scribd uploads, pdfcoffee, Telegram channels and Google Drive dumps. It's easy to see why international graduates reach for them — you're often studying from abroad, on a tight budget, with no appetite for a UK subscription you can't easily pay for. But most of those PDFs are a trap, and many are now actively misleading because of a change most "free PDF" uploaders haven't caught up with.

This is an honest guide to getting PLAB 1 revision notes and questions as a downloadable PDF — safely, legally, and aligned to what PLAB 1 actually tests in 2026.

1. Why IMGs want a PDF — and why the free ones are risky

The appeal is real and reasonable: a file you can study offline, own, and use without a UK card or a recurring subscription. The problem is the supply. The top "free PLAB 1 PDF" results tend to be:

  • Pirated copies of paid material — which is both a legal risk and, frankly, unfair to the doctors who wrote it.
  • Out of date — UK guidelines move every year, and a static PDF from a few cycles ago quietly teaches the old answer.
  • Recycled — US Step content relabelled, or generic MCQs with no link to the UK blueprint.

For a UK licensing exam, wrong reflexes are the most expensive thing you can download for free.

2. The 2024 shift that breaks most old PLAB PDFs

Here's the part the file-sharing sites haven't absorbed: PLAB 1 is now built on the same MLA content map that underpins the UKMLA Applied Knowledge Test. PLAB 1 is the AKT-equivalent for IMGs, mapped to the same blueprint, with the same UK-guideline expectations. (Our UKMLA vs PLAB explainer and the IMG guide cover exactly what changed.)

Two consequences follow:

  1. UKMLA-aligned material is the right material for PLAB 1. Notes and questions built around the MLA content map and referenced to NICE and the BNF are precisely what you need.
  2. Old PLAB PDFs may be testing the wrong thing — pre-alignment content, pre-update guidelines, or "recall" papers that no longer match the current blueprint.

So the format you want (a PDF you own) is right; the source is what matters.

3. The NICE gap is the real IMG challenge

The single biggest stumbling block for international graduates isn't intelligence or clinical experience — it's that the AKT and PLAB 1 expect UK management conventions: NICE pathways, BNF doses, CKS first-line choices, Resuscitation Council UK algorithms. If you trained elsewhere, those conventions differ from what you practised. That's why referenced material — where every answer tells you which NICE or BNF rule it follows — matters far more for IMGs than for UK graduates. Our NICE guidelines guide for the UKMLA explains the gap and how to close it.

A random PDF doesn't reference anything. That's the core reason to avoid it.

4. A legit, downloadable PLAB 1 study set

If you want notes and questions as files you own — built on the MLA content map, referenced to NICE and the BNF, and bought once with no UK subscription — that's what the MLA Prep books are designed to be:

  • The UKMLA Study Guides — revision notes plus high-yield flashcards across all 10 specialties, as PDF + EPUB you keep. These are the learn layer.
  • The UKMLA Question Bank — 5,205 single-best-answer questions, each with a fully worked, guideline-referenced explanation. This is the practise layer.

Both are mapped to the same blueprint PLAB 1 now uses, so they serve PLAB 1 and the UKMLA AKT equally. You can buy a single specialty, or take a bundle; prices are on the store. There's also the MLA Prep app (a one-off lifetime purchase with a free two-topic tier) if you want interactive practice, analytics and mocks rather than a download — useful since IMG timelines often stretch and a one-off purchase doesn't expire on you.

5. How to build a PLAB 1 study set from abroad

You don't need to spend much, and you don't need anything pirated:

  1. Free notes spineZero to Finals, the NICE CKS website and the free BNF app. All free, all UK-canonical.
  2. A referenced question source you own — the Question Bank PDF or the app, so every answer trains a UK reflex.
  3. Active recall — flashcards, built into the Study Guides or a free deck.
  4. Mocks — start with the free 50-question diagnostic, then build to full timed papers for stamina.
  5. Download for offline wherever you can, so a patchy connection abroad never blocks revision.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free PLAB 1 question bank PDF? Not a safe, current, blueprint-aligned one. The "free PDF" results are usually pirated, outdated or recycled, and many predate the MLA content map alignment. Use genuinely free online resources (Zero to Finals, NICE CKS, BMA-bundled questions) plus one legitimate paid source rather than risky downloads.

Is UKMLA material suitable for PLAB 1? Yes. Since the alignment, PLAB 1 is built on the same MLA content map as the UKMLA AKT, so UKMLA-aligned, NICE/BNF-referenced notes and questions are exactly right for PLAB 1. See UKMLA vs PLAB.

Are old PLAB 1 PDFs and recall papers still valid? Treat them with caution. Pre-alignment content and old "recalls" can test material that no longer matches the current blueprint, and the guidelines in them may be out of date. Current, referenced material is safer.

Do I need a UK bank card or subscription to revise from abroad? Not for one-off purchases. Downloadable books and a one-off app purchase avoid the recurring-subscription friction entirely, which is why they suit IMG timelines — you buy once and keep it, wherever you are.
